Mergers don't usually work out for one reason or another, at least as far as forums/community is concerned. One benefit might be the sharing of a server.
It seems they're looking into a TF2 server for approximately $25 per month. That used to be the price we paid gameservers.com back in the day. I'm reluctant to go that route because servers at that price are comparable to cheap toys, with a noticeable performance difference. The server I currently setup is using Amazon EC2 and S3. They charge based on usage, so although the price isn't fixed, it's usually around $60 per month. What's nice about it is we have absolute full control over the server AND we can use S3 for a master "fast downloads" server.
The account that I setup with amazon is structured under an entity named the "King Me Network." The idea was to create a game server provider that was agnostic to communities. The "King Me Network" would provide services such as Fast Downloads, Message of the Day, and Managed Services for the game servers.
I'd like to think that our Day of Defeat server will take off once we start playing on it for the Reunion events, but I'm not optimistic about that. If the DoD:S server fails to become popular, we could easily convert it to a dedicated TF2 server hosted by the King Me Network. The server(s) would be funded by multiple communities who collaborate on its development in terms of plugins and customization.
If you think they would find this idea appealing, please have the appropriate person take a look at this thread.
